This course examines the social and cultural history of China during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). Topics include the political structures of imperial rule; the social and cultural institutions that organized local society; the economic trends that produced the pre-modern world's largest and most advanced civilization; and the ways in which all of the above were transformed by China's 19th-century encounter with Western imperialism.
