This course examines the construction of gender roles and their relation to race and class in the United States, including a focused cross-cultural comparison of ideas about the nature of women and men. Students explore the use of gendered bodies as cultural symbols, women's contributions as agents of social change, the history of feminist movements, and the relationship between academic research and activism.
