Seminar participants will examine the controversial theory that the presence of European women in the colonies caused the downfall of the European colonial empires by distracting male administrators from the task of government while simultaneously arousing the suppressed sexuality of indigenous peoples. Participants will also examine how gender and sexuality were constructed in the colonial setting and how they were ultimately used by both the colonizers and the indigenous peoples to shape the evolution of colonial culture and society.
