ART 317A - Material Studies

Institution:
University of Maine at Farmington
Subject:
Description:
Throughout history of art, artists have explored a variety of materials, both high- and low-tech, which best suit their particular form of expression. Material Studies is a studio class, designed for advanced art students, interested in non-traditional materials as means to express one's view in a 3-D format. In this class the students will start the semester by exploring 4 materials. From their initial experiments (done in the first two weeks) students will narrow down their research to 1 material that they will study for the duration of the semester in order to thoroughly examine the physical and conceptual limitations of that material. In this class the students will utilize a hands-on approach, conduct experiments, and complete a research presentation/ paper on the material of their choice. This course can be repeated once for grade. Once a year. Credit: 4
