Description:

This course explores the theoretical and historical development of empire and nation. We begin with the question of whether or not America is an empire, which leads to an explanation of what an empire is and its relationship to nation- and state-building. In particular, we focus on the cases of Britain and China to explore these and related questions, as well as to understand the historical development of empire and nation and their future trajectories.
