PQ: Knowledge of Persian or consent of instructor. This course surveys the major events of modern history from the Constitutional Revolution of 1906 to the present as seen through the lens of poetry. Poems in both traditional and modern forms-focusing in particular on political satire, prison poems, human rights, and women' s rights-are read and analyzed against the sociopolitical circumstances to which they respond. Primarytexts are read and recited in Persian; secondary readings, discussions, and papers are in English. S. Ghahremani. Spring.
