Is a social history, a "history from below," of the Ancient Near East possible Most ancient texts document only the lives and concerns of a small sphere of élites, who are then the usual subjects of our histories. This course tries to reset the frame of inquiry around people on the periphery, the other 90 percent of the population.In examining ethnic and social identity, the organization of economic production, and the political order of the state, we develop a clearer picture of the pastoralists, villagers, and tribesmen who maintained (but sometimes radically changed) the apex of the urban social order.
