Description:

This course is devoted to a close reading and discussion of Melville' s explicitly philosophical novel. In addition to paying careful attention to the unfolding of its plot and major characters, including the white whale, we address its major themes, which include the relation between nature and civilization, human nature and human good, the nature and perpetration of evil, the meaning of suffering and the possibility of redemption, and the limits of democracy in general and of American democracy in particular .
