A course in the analysis of popular music. Emphasis is placed on standard American songs from the early to mid-20th century. Examples from other styles, including music theatre, rock, jazz, and ragtime. Examination of the art and structure of individual songs, including harmony, voice leading, melody, text, and form. Other topics include the analysis of particular performances and analysis without a score. Three hours weekly. Usually offered in alternate years. Prerequisite: TH 112 or permission of instructor.
