This course is a careful reading of Cao Xueqin's Honglou meng (The Dream of the Red Chamber). In the process, we examine some of the range of texts, images, and issues across various literary and cultural genres in late-imperial China that this immensely complex novel draws on. Our goal is to gain a deeper appreciation both of the novel itself and of the culture of late-imperial China. Texts in English.
