This lecture/discussion course covers selected Byzantine-Islamic experiences from the emergence of Islam in the seventh century through the middle of the eleventh century. With no single textbook, this course is not a narrative survey. Topics include diplomatic (political), military, economic, cultural, and religious relations that range from subtle influences and adaptations to open polemics.
