PQ: Open to students with first-year standing who plan to major in biological sciences or to prepare for a career in the health professions and whose exposure to biology in high school may have been limited. Must be taken in sequence with BIOS 20141. This course does not meet requirements in the Biological Sciences major. This is an introductory biology course intended to give a basic knowledge of the chemical and biochemical basis of biology. We cover basic chemical concepts pertinent to understanding cell biology, including the chemistry of biological chemical bonds, pH, thermodynamics, chemical equilibrium, chemical kinetics, enzyme kinetics, organic molecules, and relevant organic reactions.
