This course examines contemporary approaches to the problems associated with the rise and fall of early complex polities and undertakes a comparative examination of five pivotal case studies: Sumer, Egypt, China, the Maya lowlands, and Teotihuacan. An introduction to the role of early complex societies in nineteenth- and twentieth-century social thought is followed by an evaluation of the major theoretical frameworks archaeologists have constructed to explain the rise of states.
