1st Semester. Lect. 3, 3 credits. Introduction to soil mechanics, foundations, and surface water drainage. Soil pressure theories and their application to design of footings, basement walls, retaining walls and sheet piling structures. Soil classification and engineering properties are covered in addition to soil volumetric and gravimetric relationship; foundation construction systems and a state-of-art survey of foundation construction equipment and methods. Also, an elementary study of rainfall and runoff, and the hydraulics of culverts and drainage pipes and soil-water problems. Perquisites: CSMT 0331, 0343 and CSMT 0348.
