A comparison of the political systems of the two major Asian democracies, India and Japan, with an emphasis on the role of culture in explaining political behavior and economic development. Special attention is paid to the problems being experienced by the Indian and Japanese versions of parliamentary democracy, and to the economic policies favored by the two governments.
