Examines the origins and development of the industrial revolution in late 18th and early 19th century Britain, which many historians argue was made possible in part by the economic proceeds of British imperialism, the Atlantic slave trade in particular. Unlike more traditional histories of industrialization, in addition to the focus on the relationship between industry and empire, explores the environmental and social consequences of the process of industrialization, not just for Britain but for all of Britain's global empire, thus using providing a historical context for contemporary debates on globalization, economic development, and the environment.
