An analysis of states and societies of Africa during the colonial and independent periods. Topics to be covered include: the effect of colonialism on state structures, social groupings, and ethnic identities; regime types and domestic politics; pressures to populate regions that are not easily habitable; the effects of disease, starvation, and natural disaster on the continent's demographics; and public policies to master water and land.
