An exploration of the historical, cultural, and artistic development of Spanish America from discovery to independence. Students will also assess the impact of the encounter and development of the colonial empire on native American populations and the environment, from diaries and letters of conquerors and settlers. Particular attention will be given to the Jesuit missions in Paraguay, to the environmental expeditions through the period, and the impact of the slave trade.
