Examines several Chinese works of literature in terms of their special narrative modes, considering how each reveals the changing history of modern China and exploring how each makes its unique contribution to Chinese literature. Issues discussed include: history in literature, history outside literature, literary histories, factual and fictional as literary categories, and the historical novel.
