A study of the literatures in English from the Third World (India, Africa, and the Caribbean) since the end of colonialism. Major writers studied include Narayan, Rao, Anand, Achebe, Ngugi, Aidoo, Head, Naipaul, Walcott, and Rhys. Students read the texts in an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural context. The course examines the implications of the emergence of English as a global lingua franca, the conditions of societies caught up between the opposing pressures of tradition and modernity, and the displacement of the oral by the written tradition.
