Foundations of money, financial markets, and central banking within a capitalist framework. Theoretical emphasis will be placed on monetarist and post Keynesian explanations for money, interest, employment, and prices. Policy discussions will focus on the relationship between money market instruments and central bank policies in the context of the above theoretical frameworks. A major term paper, which compares the recent monetary policies of the Federal Reserve System with those of another central bank, is expected of all students. Prerequisite: EC235.
