An overview of the evolution of sleep and dream theory and research covering early and current scientific explorations of sleep, sleep and/or dream deprivation, sleep disorders and dreaming phenomena such as psychic dreaming, lucid dreaming, nightmares, recurrent dreams, daydreams, etc. Theories relating to dream production and meaning are reviewed from ancient times through the present.
