(also HIS 213) This course surveys the cultural, socio-demographic and related political and economic factors shaping the contemporary world and their impact on international relations. It analyzes the rise of nation-states in Europe in the 18th century and the impact of nationalism; the origins of cultural and ethnic pluralism; as well as emergent ethnic and other parochial loyalties. The course focuses on the salient issues that have taken center stage in the post-Cold War era and the rise of cultural pluralism throughout the World. Different perspectives that explain the revival of ethnic, racial, linguistic and religious differences are explored. Several important cases are analyzed, including the genocide in Rwanda, the path to ethnic conflict in the former Yugoslavia after Tito, the struggle between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland, the impact of social inequalities and narco-trafficking on Colombia's unique civil strife and the importance of narratives in Middle East violence. 3 credits
