This Level II theory and laboratory course is an introduction to pharmacology for humanistic nursing practice. The pharmacological content is integrated with the skills necessary for safe and therapeutic medication administration. The student will become familiar with the complexity of the medication administration process and the multifaceted role of the nurse. Pharmacological concepts, legal implications, and various drug classifications will be presented. Content related to the importance of research and technology as well as the impact of current social, economic, political, and health care trends on pharmacotherapeutics is discussed. Medication dosage calculations, administration techniques, documentation, communication, and patient teaching will be addressed. Application of the nursing process, assessment, and safety is emphasized. Prerequisites: BIO 120, 121, 245; CHE 112; PSY 111; SOC 101/166. Corequisites: NUR 209, 229; BIO 247.
