A study of the evolution of this unique American music phenomenon, which combines the African Negro heritage with the European forms of the New World. It covers the work songs, spirituals and the blues; the birth of jazz in New Orleans and its dissemination to St. Louis, Chicago, Kansas City and New York. Students will review the great innovators and popularizers of the entire spectrum of jazz, its forms and structure. (Satisfies general education) 3 credits
