This course may be taken prior to MAT 209. It will be an in-depth investigation into the knowledge and understandings of mathematics necessary for teachers at the elementary level K-6. The NYS Mathematics Core Curriculum MST Standard 3 and the NCTM Standards and Evaluation will act as guides to the mathematics being taught. The goal is for students to become mathematically proficient in all levels of elementary math. Conceptual understandings, procedural fluency and problem solving skills will be taught in conjunction with the content reflected in grades 4-6. Part 2 will focus on the three content areas of mathematics needed to teach the upper elementary levels, which include algebra, geometry and measurement. This course is highly recommended for all elementary education students. It is not open to freshmen. Students must be registered with the Division of Education. Prerequisites: Three years of high school mathematics, including Math A/passing Math A Regents, or Algebra/passing Regents and mathematics beyond Math A or Algebra, to include Geometry, Algebra II and Trigonometry or equivalent, or MAT071.
