This course examines the major events and developments in European history from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment. Emphasis will be placed upon social, religious and cultural developments, particularly as seen through overseas expansion, new directions in science and religious thought, and the formation of the modern state. Many of the most basic beliefs and values held today have their roots in this period making the development of Europe a key to understanding the modern world as a whole. Honor students only.
