Teacher candidates will be provided with strategies for teaching students about democratic institutions and processes within the context of the multicultural classroom and community. Identification and application of New York State Learning Standards in the elementary school classroom will be emphasized. Interdisciplinary thematic unit planning, integration and translation of knowledge and methodology from history and social sciences to activities appropriate for students through the use of learning modules in geography, history, global perspectives, economics, family and consumer science and current events will be included. Implementation of a lesson plan is required. Additionally, teaching social studies literacy skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing to native English speakers and students who are English Language Learners, including methods of enrichment and remediation, will be addressed. Prerequisite: EDU 329. Fee-$40.00. 3 credits
