(formerly CRJ 182, SOC 182, CRJ 180, SOC 180) An examination for the rationale of the existence of the criminal law, the historical antecedents of contemporary laws and the development of American jurisprudence. Introduces the student to the social and individual implications of criminal law. Utilizes examples from state and federal laws to illustrate various substantive legal issues and to examine the roles of legislatures and courts in establishing and modifying criminal statutes.
