This course traces the transformation of Europe between the Renaissance and the French Revolution. Special emphasis will be placed on the wars of religion, the revolution in European military practice, the emergence of national states, the structure and functioning of the absolutist monarchies and, especially, the wide-ranging impact of the Enlightenment.
