The Atlantic Ocean - obstacle, frontier, and highway - connected and continues to shape the cultures and societies created by this Columbian exchange. This course examines the circumstances of European encounters with Africa and America, beginning with European voyages of exploration through the abolition of the slave trade in the nineteenth century.
