Berkman Content: Introduction to and application of jazz chord theory and chord symbols, jazz scale theory, common jazz progressions, chord substitutions and forms. Written exercises presenting theoretical principles. Application of principles through performance of the student's instrument or voice. Beginning concepts of jazz improvisation, arranging, keyboard application. Prerequisite: Music 121 or permission. Taught: Alternate years, 4 semester credits.
