The founding and fortunes of the welfare state; imperialism, world wars, and globalization; conflicts over minority and women's rights and status; growth of cultural "modernism." Coverage of traditional topics (Progressivism, the New Deal, the Civil Rights movement, the Cold War) combined with a thematic approach and readings in primary and secondary sources.
