Themes vary from year to year and may include traditional political systems, colonialism and its legacies, nationalist movements, changing roles of women, problems of southern Africa, postcolonial independent Africa. Authors vary from year to year and may include early Swahili poets, Chinua Achebe, Sembene Ousmane, Wole Soyinka, Ayi Kwei Armah, Ngugi wa Thiong'o, Buchi Emecheta, Zakes Mda, Andre Brink, Nadine Gordimer, J.M. Coetzee, Alex La Guma, Bessie Head, Nuruddin Farah, others. Prerequisite: None. Taught: Alternate years, 4 semester credits.
