Using ethnographic readings and films, course explores central questions in study of social organization and customs of various cultures. Topics of study include: anthropological methodologies, comparison of cultures, ethnocentrism and relativism, language and symbolism, family and kinship, power and control, peace and violence. The impact of Westernization and modernization on traditional cultures is considered, with particular reference to American conventions and values.
