This course develops students' understanding of language development in the first eight years of life and the principles that govern the process. The language learning process is studied as an integral part of the development of thinking and development of the child's sense of self. Students learn how various contexts both inside and outside a child's home interact with factors such as age, sex, and cultural experiences of participants in a conversation to affect language competence and performance.
