Course offers focused, in-depth study of a significant issue or issues in African and African-American literary and cultural production. Students will read, discuss, research, and write about the issues. Course includes readings in theory as well as literature and may include examples from disciplines such as art, film, and music. Representing the African in the New World focuses on such writers as Houston Baker, Jacques Derrida, Brenda Dixon Gottschild, Toni Morrison, and others.
