Course examines photography's central role in both reflecting and shaping the cultural, social, political, economic, and scientific context of the 20th and 21st centuries. In addition to examining the medium's major movements and practitioners within the context of the social, cultural, and political pressures of the day, the course will also emphasize the developing historiography, theory, and criticism of the medium. Students will be introduced to various methods of historical investigation through a balance of lectures, discussions, field trips to view historic photographic objects, primary and secondary source readings, group projects, writing assignments, and/or tests. 3 CREDI TS PREREQUISITES: 52-1152 WRITING AND RHETORIC II
