This course examines musical traditions from around the world. Many kinds of music are considered, including folk genres, contemporary popular styles, and court and classical traditions. It examines music as a vital component in culture and lived experience. It considers the roles music plays in national society and public culture, and it develops students' musical vocabularies, teaching them to listen analytically.
