Course introduces the history of art until the end of the Middle Ages. Various periods, including the Stone Age, Egypt, the Ancient Near East, Greece, Rome, Early Christian, Byzantine, Early Medieval, Romanesque, and Gothic, will be studied in relationship to the Western art tradition. The art of Asia, the Americas, and Africa may also be surveyed. Students will gain an appreciation of the aesthetic values of these cultures and an understanding of the historical, socio-political, religious, and other contexts for the creation of art. 3 CREDITS
