This course addresses the tools, concepts, techniques, and methodologies used to assess and improve the quality of health services delivery. This course includes an overview of the historical beginnings, state-of-the-art, voluntary, and governmental efforts to assess and improve the quality of health services in the U.S., including methods more commonly used in manufacturing such as Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, and Statistical Process Control. The topics addressed include definitions of quality in health services, dimensions of quality care and performance, the application of Six Sigma to health services quality, process mapping, quality control charts, variation in practice patterns, the application of Lean Manufacturing to health services quality, data collection and analysis, blending Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing, errors and threats to patient safety, service flaws, and waste.
