This is the first course of a two-semester sequence. A study of the structure, nomenclature, reactions and spectroscopy of organic compounds. Functional groups such as alkanes, alkyl halides, alcohols, and ethers are discussed. The laboratory covers the techniques for preparing and purifying organic compounds. Three lectures and one three-hour laboratory. Prerequisites: CHE 107, 108, 109, 110; or permission of the instructor Course fee: $ 35
