This course is a survey of the evolution of societies in the Southern Atlantic World from 1400-1824 focusing on Africa, Spain, Portugal, Spanish America, Brazil, and the Caribbean. Topics include political and commercial systems, the slave trade, evangelization and the hybridization of religions, gender ideology, and social history.
