A critical study of traditional philosophic theories of language in its role in poetry and literature. Discussion will center on such issues as the origin of language, its expressive function, and its relation to philosophic thought in poetry and literature. Selected readings in the theory of language, the theory of poetics, and modern literary criticism. Open to junior and senior literature majors without prerequisite, and to juniors and seniors with credit for one semester in philosophy, or with permission of the instructor.
