This course combines Spanish-American civilization, culture, and literature from the 19th century period of independence to the present. Key literary and cultural texts are examined within the historical, political, and social context in which they were created. The course treats canonical as well as non-canonical texts, from both "high" and "popular" culture, and includes historical texts, narrative, poetry, drama, film, art, architecture, and music.
