Drawing together the histories of four continents - Europe, Africa, North America, and South America - this course explores the nature and meaning of the new Atlantic world created by the interaction of the peoples of the old and new worlds. It examines the Atlantic world through the experiences of the men and women - European, African, and Native American - who inhabited it from the mid-15th century through about 1820. Students will learn about the often volatile and constantly shifting mixture of people and pathogens, of labor systems and crops, and of nations, empires, and subjects that contributed to the painful and unexpected emergence of this new Atlantic community.
