This course will examine millenarian religious movements and thought in a variety of religious traditions throughout the world. The western roots of apocalyptic thought in the biblical tradition, beginning in the Hebrew Bible and culminating in Christian scripture, will provide the foundation for study. The survey will then include other manifestations: in the medieval world, among Native Americans, and in nineteenth and twentieth century America.
