An introduction to the contemporary music-scapes of China, Japan, and Korea. We will explore contemporary forms of instrumental music that retain, refigure, or renew connections with traditional forms: newly invented or modernized ensembles of traditional instruments; composers of avant-garde concert music and their encounters with traditional music; innovative performers of traditional instruments; and pop music and efforts of traditional instrumentalists to popularize their music.
