This course introduces the students to the theory of contemporary art and performance, exploring its social, political and historical contents from a semiotic perspective. Postmodern action and performance are described in terms of cultural strategies typical of nonconformist intellectual in the late 20th century. Special attention is paid to the artist's identity issues and to recent changes in the social status of artists.
