Institution:
Trinity College
Subject:
Description:
From where does the image of Africa as a continent of jungles, famines, warfare, and 'tribes' come We will examine traveler's accounts, social scientific research, ethnographies and ethnographic museums, and adult and children's fiction in order to explore how representations of Africa in the West have changed from the 15th century to the present. The course will pay special attention to the 19th century, when the myth of the 'dark continent' prevailed and to the 20th century, when that image was challenged by Pan-Africanists in the diaspora and in Africa.
